Patient Assessment of Primary Care for Health Cooperative Korean Medicine Clinics in South Korea

Abstract

|
|
Objectives : Health cooperative movementis ofincreasing concern among medicalconsumers and professionals in Korea. Most health cooperative clinics provide Western Medicine and Korean Medicine(KM)topatients.ThisstudyaimedtoevaluatetheprimarycarelevelofhealthcooperativeKM clinicsandcompareitwithlocalKM clinicsinKorea.
Methods : Facetofacesurveywasperformedatthe3healthcooperativeKM clinicsand5localKM clinicswiththeKoreanPrimaryCareAssessmentTool(KPCAT).TheKPCAT consistsof5domains (21 items): first contact (5), coordination function (3), comprehensiveness (4), family/community orientation(4),andpersonalizedcare(5).SubjectswerepatientsorguardianswhohadvisitedKM clinics fivetimesormoreduringthelast3months.Wecomparedprimarycarescoresofeachdomainbetween healthcooperativeKM clinicsandlocalKM clinics.
Results : Datawerecollectedfrom 200respondents(100patientsfrom healthcooperativeKM clinics and100localKM clinics).TotalaveragescoresoftheKPCAT forhealthcooperativeclinicsandlocal KM clinicswere81.1¡¾12.0and75.4¡¾9.5,respectively.Amongprimarycaredomains,personalizedcarewas thehighest(89.2¡¾12.0,89.6¡¾8.4,respectively),andcomprehensivenessfunctionwasthelowest(68.5¡¾22.5,54.5¡¾22.0,respectively).Significantdifferences between two groups were noted in comprehensiveness function(68.5vs.54.5,P=0.000),family-communityorientation(79.5vs.73.0,P=0.004),firstcontact(89.2vs84.0,p=0.001)andcoordinationfunction(74.0vs68.7,p=0.025).
Conclusions : Basedonthepatientsassessment,healthcooperativeKM clinicsprovidemoreprimary care-orientedservicesthanlocalKM clinics.Thismeansthathealthcooperativecliniccanbeoneof alternatives to strengthen the primary health care in Korea.Future researches are recommended to measurepatientssatisfactionandtreatmenteffectivenessinthehealthcooperativeclinics.
